Shin Splints & Brown Rice

Wow!  What a week it’s been…and it’s only Tuesday!  Yesterday was the first day of school, both for my children and at the university where I work.  My youngest son started Kindergarten.  <sniff, sniff>  Needless to say it’s been an emotional couple of days.  <sniff, sniff>  The workplace has been a zoo, especially last week.  In college administration, the week-before-fall-classes-start madness is always a crazy time.

In other news, I have been slowly increasing my walking/jogging efforts, and now have shin splints to boot.  They are strange shin splints, though.  Not so much on the front of my legs (where I’ve had shin splints before), but on the inside of my legs.  I feel pretty certain that a lack of good running shoes is one culprit, but decided to call my sister-in-law – who’s in the medical field – for further possible causes and treatment.  She had some great tips for me, and I’m anxious to explore each one…stay tuned for more on this!

In still other news, my husband and oldest son have recently taken a liking to rice.  They are two of the pickiest eaters I know, outdone only by my youngest son.  I have been fixing white rice at least one night a week since this amazing discovery was made.  One nutrition book I’m reading suggests that brown rice is better for you than white rice.  Dedicated to buying better foods, I picked up some brown rice at the grocery store on Sunday.  Guess what?  Brown rice takes twice as long to cook as white rice.  I let it cook for 30 minutes (per package directions), and it still wasn’t tender.  It is still in the pot on the stove.  Yuck.  Back to white rice we go.  At least until I figure out the secret of cooking brown rice.

Well, I guess that’s all for tonight.  Gotta go elevate my legs (ouchie!) and get some shut-eye.  And brainstorm about what I’m going to do with a partially used bag of brown rice….

The Dress!

dressbox2From the depths of my closet I present to you…my wedding dress!

We’ve lived in three different houses during the last 14 years, and in each house this dress box has been shoved in the bottom (or top) of my closet, mostly out of sight and out of mind.  I’ve decided not to open it just yet.  I think I’ll open it after the first of the new year, when hopefully I will be much lighter than I am now.

We have lots of photos from our wedding day, but I can’t really remember the details of my dress.  There’s quite a bit of bead work, so I remember it being pretty heavy.  I do have one really vivid memory of my dress on our wedding day:

It was after the reception, and my new husband and I had just done a “mock farewell” with our family and friends.  It was a mock farewell because we did the classic form-two-lines-and-walk-through-the-bubbles sendoff, but we weren’t really leaving.  We had so much family from Arkansas in Albuquerque (my hometown), and we wanted to spend more time with them.  We had reserved a large party room at my favorite Mexican restaurant, and we all regrouped for dinner.  It really was a marvelous time.

Anywho, after the bubble sendoff, we went to the dressing room to change.  We were finally alone, just the two of us, for the first time that day.  I asked my new hubby if he liked my dress.  Of course, he said he thought it was beautiful, and he gave me a twirl so he could get a good look at it.  As I was twirling, I accidentally stepped onto the hem of my dress and part of the beautifully beaded trim ripped right off!  Oops.  I think my mom had it repaired before we preserved the dress, but I can’t remember for sure.

I cannot wait to see my wedding dress again!  Just pulling the box out of the closet made me a little more determined to stick to my weight loss goals so I can attempt to wear it once more.  Or maybe twice more.  I really want to wear my dress in Las Vegas.  On my first trip to Vegas, I was so enamored with the sheer number of brides and grooms just walking around the streets in their formal wear!  It was awesome!  I think I’d like to walk around the streets of Vegas in my wedding gown for a day, soaking in the love from random strangers who congratulate me.  Yes.  This is going on my to-do list.

As you may have read in THE DREAM, I’m not sure that I will actually be able to fit in my wedding dress again, but daydreaming about wearing it is so much fun.  I have found that many of the weight loss books and magazines I am reading talk about the power and importance of visualizing your weight loss goals.  Well, I’ve aced that aspect of weight loss!  It’s very easy to visualize my slim, healthy self.  If only shedding the weight were that easy….

Even boxed up as it is, I think that dangling my wedding dress as the proverbial carrot in front of me will help me stay on track.  We shall see.  Thanks for taking a moment to stop by the blog.  Goodnight, friends!

Welcome to my blog!

Oh my goodness!  The big day is finally here!  Meaning I’ve finally mustered up the courage to “launch” my new blog.  Thank you so much for stopping by!  You can read THE DREAM, THE PLAN, and THE RULES for more details on this blog, but in a nutshell, I am trying to lose weight, and hope to lose enough to fit back in my wedding dress.  I’m really excited and totally freaked out about this goal and this blog!

I got the idea a couple of months ago, right before my 14th wedding anniversary.  I’ve needed to lose the weight for a while now, but I just couldn’t seem to get motivated.  My hubby and I started daydreaming about taking a big vacation for our 15th wedding anniversary, and the idea to “Get in the Dress” just grew out of that daydream.

Please bear with me while I learn my way around this whole blogging thing.  It’s a little overwhelming at first!  While I would love for you to “follow” my blog, I know most of us are very busy people, so don’t feel like you have to.  I don’t follow many blogs.  If you just want to check in on my progress every now and again, that’d be awesome.  I’m going to need all the support I can get!

Please take a minute to poke around my pages and leave me some feedback.  Stay tuned for more on my crazy little scheme!
